When you've taken time off from your regular routine because, well, life happens, it could be extremely difficult to buckle down again and "re-routine" yourself. Coming from someone who gave up their routine of a 4am gym session, teach, cook a healthy dinner, and sleep, in order to move across the country, explore the peaks and valleys of California, indulge in the new and delicious, and not sign up for a gym- this topic hits home. Currently, I have found a job and the idea of a routine sounds comforting! But how do I get out of one non-routine and into something meaningful? It all starts at the beginning: 1) Make a written plan about what you'd like to accomplish on a given day. Example: wake up, teach, workout, cook dinner, grade papers, relax 2) Take a look in the pantry and the fridge. Get rid of the foods that will not help you love a healthy life-style. Example: keep the fruits, veggies, proteins but discard the chips, ice cream, and overly processed foods. 3) Go shopping! Buy foods that are C.R.A.P (carbonated. refined sugar. artificial flavor. processed) free! This means finding foods with ingredients that you understand or could replicate. 4) Meal prep! This is essential to staying on task. Spend Sunday cooking your meals for the week... At least lunches. When you cook, pack, and plan... You waste less time in the morning deciding what you'd like to eat that day. And make a menu for dinner for the week. It's much easier to come home knowing you plan on making sweet potatoes with ground turkey and spinach, then fumbling in the cabinets for an idea when you get home. 5) After work, get right into those gym clothes and go before touching that couch! It's so easy to come home and crash. Let's face it, work is exhausting and all we want to do it relax. But, your body and mind will be at total peace when you take the steps to workout after work. This could be as simple as leashing up the dog and going for an hour run or 20 minute sprint session, grabbing the kettle bell and doing some KB heavy workouts, or taking a daily yoga class to unwind. Workout, cook, then couch mode! 6) This one is key so pay attention. Get a good nights sleep. The body needs 6-8 hours in order to fully recover from daily stress. Get to bed at the same time each night. ROUTINE!!! Your body will appreciate it and you'll feel much better about all you need to accomplish after a long day. Getting back into a routine, especially after summer and vacations. With these steps, you'll be on the road for not only a positive day, but a healthy and happy mind and body! Shannon Koerner |
